Bouldering in Calw
Hidden in the Northern Black Forest, the Calw bouldering area offers a collection of sandstone blocks with a wild and authentic character. Spread across sectors like Beinberg, Waldeck, Tiefenbronn, and Ernstmühl, the climbing is varied—technical slabs, crimpy faces, steep walls, and the occasional pocketed overhang. The rock, Middle Buntsandstein, is classic for the region, demanding precise movement and good conditions. The forest setting provides a tranquil atmosphere, and with few climbers around, the experience feels secluded and adventurous. Access is sensitive, however: climbing is tolerated mainly at Waldeck, provided climbers respect local rules—no climbing on wet rock, minimal chalk, and keeping a low profile at all times.
The best season to boulder here is from late spring through autumn, when dry conditions and mild temperatures (12–22°C in summer) make the sandstone climbable. Autumn days are especially rewarding, with crisp conditions and fewer visitors. Unlike major German areas such as Odenwald or Frankenjura, Calw remains relatively quiet, which is both its charm and its challenge—resources are limited, and local knowledge is key. What makes Calw distinctive is its blend of wild forest ambiance and the responsibility required to keep climbing tolerated. For those willing to respect the delicate balance, it offers an intimate and rewarding bouldering experience in a pristine Black Forest setting.
